Digital asset lending company BlockFi announced on Nov. 28 that it has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in New Jersey. The bankruptcy filing revealed, among other details, that BlockFi aims to restructure and keep specific employees on board. BlockFi has eight daughter companies that are also included in the bankruptcy motion. Later news revealed bankruptcy proceeding details, including BlockFi’s attorney reporting that $355 million of the organization’s capital is sitting frozen on FTX.
In a settlement with the United States Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), U.S. crypto exchange Kraken will pay a fine of approximately $362,000 for breaking sanctions against Iran. The firm self-reported the violation to the OFAC, according to comments from Marco Santori, Kraken’s chief legal officer. Kraken allegedly allowed usage of its exchange by Iran-based participants and did not have a proper system in place for banning certain IP addresses. FTX headlines keep rolling in as events unfold. FTX’s bankruptcy case has prompted the U.S. trustee working the case to request an independent examiner to come look into the details surrounding FTX’s downfall. Another headline revealed that bank accounts of sister entity Alameda Research were reportedly used for FTX customer fund activities without the exchange working with a bank directly. FTX was also the subject of a Dec. 1 meeting of the U.S. Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry. Additionally, Bahamian authorities are investigating FTX.
Binance continued to work on increasing its transparency regarding its reserves. The crypto exchange hired Mazars, an accounting firm known for retaining former U.S. President Donald Trump as a long-time client, to perform its proof-of-reserves (PoR) audit. Mazars and the Trump family cut ties in 2022. In another development related to the PoR audit, Binance has recently moved large amounts of cryptocurrencies, raising concerns in the crypto community.
Three Arrows Capital liquidators are having difficulties engaging with Su Zhu and Kyle Davies, the hedge fund’s founders. During a virtual hearing in the Southern District of New York Bankruptcy Court, lawyers representing the liquidators said the founders did not engage with them in recent months, despite being active on social media. Zhu and Davies are believed to be currently based in Indonesia and the United Arab Emirates, where it is difficult to enforce foreign court orders.

Bitcoin spent some time at over $17,000, although the asset has played above and below the level multiple times in the past days, according to Cointelegraph’s BTC price index. Early in the week, pseudonymous digital asset analyst il Capo Of Crypto tweeted that danger possibly lies ahead for BTC if the asset falls under the $16,000 mark. “When it breaks below 16k, it teleports to 12k-14k,” the analyst said on Nov. 28. Joshua David Nicholas received a prison sentence of approximately four years for his involvement in EmpiresX, a $100 million crypto Ponzi operation. Nicholas served as head trader for the scheme, claiming the promise of profits based on bot trading, although the operation was actually a Ponzi scheme that misused customer funds. Still at large, Emerson Pires and Flavio Goncalves also played roles in the scam, which ran from 2020 to 2022.
An investigation by the Texan securities regulator is looking into whether Sam Bankman-Fried and FTX US violated Texas securities laws. Bankman-Fried must appear in court on Feb. 2 as part of the investigation. According to a notice of hearing filed by Texas State Securities Board Director Joseph Rotunda and served to Bankman-Fried on Nov. 29, FTX US offered unregistered securities to Texans through its “EARN” accounts.

Maya hears about Montclair and remembers a story her mother used to tell her about a Great Horn owl named Montclair that was very fast and very annoying. She wanted to race him just as her mother did and beat him. Marie and Demarcus show Maya a flier for Tri Mountain Race that is accepting race teams due to the long distance. Maya, Marie, and DeMarcus arrive at the Sunny Plateau after a few days of travel with a caravan of traders transporting goods from Alune’s Mountain to Sunny Plateau. Maya looks around at everything and flies around the Sunny Plateau to see the sights. DeMarcus walks with Marie to the Traveler’s Inn near the Plateau center. Maya swoops down near a factory to see some engineers working on gear and selling their gear. She goes to each merchant to ask questions about their gear and learn all she can about flight assistance gear for the race. While shopping through different stalls of gear, a tiger riding a vehicle that has one wheel attached to a seat and handlebars comes riding past Maya at high speed almost knocking her over. After seeing Maya’s wings expand, I felt a spark.” Marco replies. “Well my wings are impressive too.” DeMarcus says and spreads his wings out for measurements. Marco brings out his measuring tape and measures DeMarcus’ wingspan. “Thanks. I will take notes and build your equipment.” Marco says and gets back to working on Maya’s gear. “How long will it take?” DeMarcus asks and relaxes his wings. “How much time do I have?” Marco asks. “The race is happening on the day of the Dragon Moon.” Marie says and picks up one of the unfinished inventions. “It starts at Alune’s mountain and ends at Raysh Peak. DeMarcus and I are teaming up to win.” Maya says smiling. “That is plenty of time. But I need you two to wear the gear to test it. But traveling back and forth would take too long.” Marco says taking more notes. “Then come to Othello City. It has space for you to set up shop. And my parents can help you find a place.” Maya responds with a smile. “I will look into it. My mom does long distance running for fun and has visited Alune’s Mountain before, and my father is chef so he might move with me to feed a new crowd.” Marco replies. “Plus, I can feed you. Archie takes a hold of the lead as they reach the first racing gate. DeMarcus flaps in sync with Maya as they both follow Zhang's line. Each racing gate DeMarcus and Maya get closer and closer to overtaking Archie. As the final leg of the race approaches, DeMarcus begins to speed up and flap vigorously and overtake Archie. Montclair and Maya battle for the lead in the night as they weave through the trees and the racing gates that guide them. Archie swoops through each gate gaining momentum and decreasing the gap. DeMarcus does not back down one feather while conserving his energy for the sunrise. As the night begins to draw to a close Maya and Montclair are beak to beak as they exit the forest and enter the rocky plains that lead to the desert and the final sprint. Archie catches up to the two but the moon lit owls are too fast for her even in her element. DeMarcus uses this time to close the gap and move in position to be the anchor. Maya catches the wind just right and spins into a corkscrew and into the lead as the sunrise begins. Montclair furiously flaps after her and his Flight Assistance gear activates allowing him to keep up with Maya but DeMarcus uses the sunrise to begin his run for the lead. Maya glides into position behind DeMarcus as he gathers the sunlight with his Flight Assistance gear and gains speed. Montclair hangs on to second place as Archie tires out and DeMarcus surges forward with Maya using his draft to glide to the finishing platform then land to the applause of the spectators. After the post race celebration the crew returns to Othello City and DeMarcus tells Marie that he loves her. It takes Marco and Marie by surprise but Maya knew this would happen. The gears thrusters are fueled by the Flow of the Sun and Moon and propelled Maya higher and higher up the side of Alune’s Mountain. I remember those bad old days. I was with PNOC at that time and Saudi Aramco wouldn’t load any crude oil to our very large crude carrier (VLCC) parked at their Ras Tanura port unless we paid in advance. We used to get 60 days of credit. I was privileged to join a mission to negotiate oil supplies around the same time. We used our company Learjet because it would facilitate our movement from one oil producing country to another. Besides, the aircraft was due for maintenance in Germany and was flying in that direction. Our pilots carried several duffel bags full of dollar bills to pay for refueling our aircraft and other needed services. Our usual credit card was no longer honored. They were not taking chances with us. The whole world knew Marcos drove the Philippines to the rocks. There was not enough foreign exchange at the Central Bank to pay for imports, including essential medicines. Those were the days after Ninoy Aquino was killed by the regime. The country’s political situation was volatile. Business confidence was down. There was capital flight, further exacerbating our precarious foreign exchange situation. Then prime minister Cesar Virata was worried enough to take former Central Bank governor Jaime Laya and Cesar Buenaventura, the private sector representative to the Monetary Board, to New York to talk to our bankers. Little did they know that the situation was worse than they imagined. As soon as they sat down with the head of the lead bank managing our account, they were told that the Philippine foreign exchange reserves were overstated by $600 million. “We were caught with our pants down,” Buenaventura told me in an interview last Saturday. The banker told them there was nothing to talk about until they got their financial statements in order. Buenaventura said they knew they had problems, but they were shocked to hear how bad the country’s situation was. Neither Virata, who was also the finance secretary, nor Laya who was CB governor, had any inkling. The first order of business was to avert a debt default. So they rushed back to Manila to verify the information they were given. They got SGV to go through the numbers, and sure enough they were told the $600 million overstatement was true. The country was broke. It was caused by a combination of factors constituting a perfect storm. The Marcos cronies couldn’t pay PNB, DBP, GSIS, giving rise to a crisis among the three GFIs. Also adversely affected were crony banks: Traders Royal and UCPB. Principal exports like sugar and copra were suffering price declines. In the meantime, prices for essential imports like oil were rising fast. Capital flight worsened after the assasination of Ninoy. In short, we had a forex crisis. It was also found that PNB branches moved money to branches in another time zone with the same going back before banking hours opened in the sending branch. It gave the impression we had more dollars than we really did. The economic managers had to face the reality of having no more dollars in the Central Bank to pay the banks or to pay for basic imported necessities like oil. Virata knew they had no choice but to request for a debt payment moratorium for about $20 billion in outstanding debt to some 300 banks. But the banks did not even want to talk to a Marcos government official. Virata knew they needed a new CB governor with enough international gravitas. They turned to Jobo Fernandez. It took a while to convince the veteran banker to take the job. When he finally agreed, he sat down with Virata and company to assess the situation. At the end of it, Buenaventura said Fernandez remarked: “Gentlemen… the way this looks it seems we are just shuffling deck chairs on board the Titanic.” The sudden collapse of confidence from international financial institutions made it difficult for the Philippine government to get debt relief, much less to borrow. Both were needed to cut the increasing budget deficit. The government had to impose import controls and implemented foreign exchange rationing. Forex access was primarily for the purchase of crude oil and petroleum products. All others had to get their own forex from the black market. To make sure the Central Bank had enough forex to pay for crude oil, then trade and industry secretary Roberto Ongpin tapped the Binondo Central Bank. Ongpin met weekly with five or six of the top Binondo blackmarket traders of forex and decreed that they supply so much forex weekly at a set price. The dollar bills were packed, flown by private plane to Hong Kong, and deposited presumably in the Central Bank account at PNB Hong Kong. That simulates forex coming into the system to at least cover oil purchases. The country was on a hand-to-mouth existence for its forex requirements. The Central Bank also created a fund to guarantee payment of airline tickets at guaranteed rates. The airlines refused to accept the unstable peso for payment. To address the threat of runaway inflation, the Central Bank introduced the so-called Jobo Treasury bills, which paid interest rates as high as 38 percent, to mop up liquidity. However, this may have also contributed to the rise in the cost of goods. They also hoped the high interest rate of the Jobo bills would attract foreign exchange. The economic mess got worse. Stagflation set in and GDP contracted for successive years. As a result many businesses failed. The peso was devalued from P8:$1 to P14 then to P20 from 1983 to 1985. A tough IMF economic stabilization program induced severe recession. The Marcos government had to cut overall government expenditures to reduce deficits. Epilogue: Marcos bankrupted the Central Bank; it had to be dissolved and replaced by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas. Its bad accounts are still being paid for by taxpayers. Young Filipinos should learn from history.

Here's the idea A trading simulator with real-time prices (stocks, forex & crypto) where the three top-performing users receive real money prizes (probably Amazon gift cards) each week. Users can play and participate in the weekly prize contest without any investment or fees.
